How to install artificial grass on land?
Unless it is a more complex project, the installation of artificial turf is a simple process for which you don’t need great technical knowledge. In the case you decide to take care of the installation yourself, Varinias teaches you step by step how to install the artificial turf on land in a simple and quick way.
Tools and material you need to install Varinias artificial grass:
- Tube
- Cutter
- Safety gloves
- Weed barrier
- Nails or staples
- Herbicide
- Artificial grass
- Bonding- or self-adhesive band
- Special adhesive for artificial grass
- Serrated shovel
- Adhesive applicator
- Silica sand or PetFil filler
- Hard bristle brush
- Realsmell Enzymatic Cleaner
The 9 steps to install your own artificial turf on land:
1. Measure and prepare the surface
The very first thing you should know, before even buying your artificial grass, are the measurements of the particular surface. As you can imagine, a strict measure and clear plan is really important to make sure you buy the right amount of artificial turf.
Good to know: Varinias artificial turf is stored in rolls of 2 or 4 meters. So, unless your surface matches these measures, you have to cut the rolls to adapt it to the surface.
A good preparation saves you a lot of money whilst buying your products. Besides, it makes the final result look way better!
You don’t need any bumps or irregularities during the installation. That is why it is important to level the ground on which the artificial turf will be installed.
To do this, you must:
- Eliminate irregularities and other vegetations or stones which may affect the final appearance of the installation.
- Apply an herbicide to prevent the vegetation from growing (back).
- Finally, proceed to level the ground by applying sand and gravel (which also favours a better drainage of the installation).
2. Cover the surface with weed barriers
A weed barrier is necessary to prevent the proliferation of weeds that are able to deteriorate the appearance of the surface. You need to cover the surface with the barriers, using an overlap of 10 cm at the ends. After, use nails every meter to attach the grass to the ground.In the perimeters of the installation, you need to trim the leftovers before attaching it. In this way you make sure the superfluous material is hidden under the installation.
3. Cover the surface with weed barriers
As mentioned above, Varinias artificial turf is stored in rolls of 2 or 4 meter. Therefore, you must measure and plan the layout of the turf well to buy the right amount of artificial turf. The Varinias team is able to help you with these calculations. Moreover, since it is not something as simple as it might seem at first, we are happy to cut the grass rolls for you. Do you prefer to cut the grass yourself? Keep in mind you must always wear safety gloves to avoid accidents.
4. Cover the surface with artificial turf
Make sure you always lay down the grass on the same side and in the same direction. If not, the final result of the surface will be affected in a negative way. This is due to the fact that when rolling, the fibres of the grass are always shifted to one side.
Once you have covered the surface, you need to cut the ends to make sure they are straight. Do you have to deal with obstacles? Be careful whilst cutting around those particular area(s) and check the result every few centimetres to avoid possible failures.

6. Attach the installation
To prevent the grass from moving or rising whilst playing on it, you need staples to attach the installation at every meter. Pay extra attention to the ends and perimeter!
7. Sprinkle the artificial grass with silica sand
The use of silica sand is optional, but it helps the artificial turf to keep the right temperature and not get too hot on warm, sunny days.
By applying silica sand to the grass, the artificial surface gets the chance to settle in a better way. In addition, the appearance of Varinias turf lasts longer, since the sand stimulates the recovery of the fibre.
For the installations with pets, we recommend the use of our special Petfil filler which favours the elimination of bad smells.
8. Brush and apply Realsmell
Congratulations, you are almost done with the installation of the Varinias artificial turf. Now, look at the surface. Do you notice the fibres are somewhat flat? This is possible and caused by the storage in rolls. No need to worry. Brushing the grass with a brush with hard bristles will make the fibres stand up again!
We advise you to brush the grass after a couple of hot hours of sunshine. In this way, the grass is more manageable, which makes it easier to make the fibres stand up again. Finally, we recommend cleaning the surface by watering the artificial turf and by applying our Reallsmell enzymatic cleaner. The Realsmell will provide a nice aroma of freshly cut grass, whilst benefiting your artificial turf with bactericidal properties and antistatic.
9. Enjoy your installation!
Invite family and friends, go play with your dog or just enjoy some me-time. The installation is finished, and the surface is ready for use! Do not worry about mowing and watering the grass on a daily basis. Varinias artificial turf does not need intensive maintenance to stay in good condition.
